The Vice Presidential Debate: About a Tie in Lies

The Vice Presidential Debate last night was somewhat refreshing to watch because both the candidates, and Gwen Ifill, the moderator, treated each other with respect and dignity. However, it was disappointing to hear both candidates continue to distort or misstate the facts. They each committed perjury in the presence of the American people.

As for the the question about who won the debate? That depends on which channel you watched.

ABC summed it up with “Biden, Palin Avoid Major Gaffes in Economy, Foreign Policy Debate”.

CBS Polls indicated “Uncommitted Voters Say Biden Won”.

Fox News analysts said, “Palin Performance Helps McCain Regain Political Footing”.

CNN reported, “Analysis: Palin gets back on track, but Biden wins debate”.

NBC headlined, “Biden V. Palin: No Train Wreck”, but reporter Chuck Todd’s caption next to the photograph of Biden and Palin read, “Palin started strong and proved to be a folksy cliché machine. As for Biden, he had a senator’s grasp of the facts, and I mean that as a compliment.

NBC’s photo caption was the most interesting, especially since the distortions and inaccuracies posted on Factcheck.org indicate neither candidate had a “grasp of the facts“.  Unless of course, Mr. Todd was insinuating there’s a big difference between the truth and “a senator’s grasp of the facts”, and I mean that as a compliment.

Perhaps the most truthful comment of the debate was Senator Biden’s remark that “Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice president we’ve had probably in American history.” Afterall, he is the only vice president in history to ever shoot a friend while hunting quail.

In the end, each American will render a final verdict at the ballot box on November 4th, and hopefully, that verdict will be founded in fact, instead of decided by deception.
